Environmental Writing was born of a marriage of passion, background and talent.
I have a passion for the environment, an extensive background in writing and publishing in both the business and non-profit worlds, and a talent for putting scientific, legal and economic concepts and arguments into plain, accessible English.
My passion for the environment began during family vacations spent in the north woods of Minnesota and was nurtured by a great set of high school science teachers. After a long business career, I decided to re-focus my life around this passion, and began a PhD program in the Earth Sciences. A change in circumstances forced me to put the PhD on hold, but opened the door to a job as Manager of Planning and Communications for the National Center for Earth-surface Dynamics (where I had been pursuing my research), a job which included design, writing and editing for their annual reports, research reports, brochures, web site and newsletter. Later, I hired on as one-person staff at the University of Minnesota's then-fledgling Institute on the Environment, where I worked on communications projects for both the Institute itself and the Statewide Conservation and Preservation plan project: brochures, web sites, the strategic and communications plans, and presentations for stakeholders and potential donors.
In the end, I'd much rather "do" than "plan" or "manage," so I decided to hang out my shingle and support organizations that support the environment by helping them carry that message in all its forms to their stakeholders.
You walk the walk, and I'll help you talk the talk.
